Just a quick post to announce the Tradewind Knitwear Designs Summer Sale that runs from August 24th through the 30th. This is a great opportunity to stock up on fiber: Celestial Merino in Mottled Solids, Shelridge Farm – Soft Touch Ultra and Joy. For details about the Soft Touch Ultra and to see the colour card click here. Check out our free pattern, the Felted Double-Knit MP3 Bag, which works wonderfully in the Joy.

A sample of our Sumptuous Merino Solids featured in the Sale:

Socks are a small fun project, a mini engineering miracle, an art form in themselves. They are ideal portable knitting and are always a very welcome gift (if you can bear to part with them). We’re offering a new, free .pdf – How to Knit a Perfect Sock. For those working their first sock, references to my Sock Techniques 1 DVD are given throughout the pattern.

For a fancier looking sock without changing colours try the self-patterning Opal Sock Yarns. The yarn is 75% wool/25% polyamid, machine washable and dryable.

all your work and progress on the cottage is impressive! thanks for the link to the perfect sock….it came in handy last night when i decided to start a pair of socks and needed a good reference!

I’ve recently received your Mermaid sock pattern but find I’m disappointed in the yarns available to make them as bright and colorful as those you display. What yarn was used for the pair in The Knitter? Any chance you’ll carry a line of colors dyed especially for these?

If I make the pattern from the toe up, will my result be much different?

    Thank you for your time.

    • Hi Shelly,
As long as you select a yarn with long sections of colour with an abrupt colour change from one colour to the next you will achieve a similar result.
Re the toe up – it should work fine up the foot, heel and leg, you will need to apply the garter stitch to the live stitches at the top of the sock to create the cuff.
      Have fun,
      L
