Teaching on-line at Craftsy

My teaching and traveling is fueled by you! Ask any  passionate teacher, we get a huge kick out of enabling someone to grasp a concept or master a technique. That’s why teaching live classes is so much fun. There is an energy generated by the interaction within a class. The muttering “well that was worth the price of admission” or the odd “wahoo!” popping unbidden from the lips of the newly enabled is the real pay.

Teaching virtually is rather different. I rely on people taking the time to write. Writing reviews, or just sending notes. Believe me I read and appreciate them and hug the words to myself when the going gets tough!

This recent letter really made me smile!

“Subject: Another one of your students

I am not a computer expert. I am writing this letter for the third time. Hope it makes it.

When I was looking at your vacation photos, I couldn’t help but feel that I was seeing a
family member or an old friend who had sent me some vacation pics.
After all; you have been in my home teaching me to knit since my 60th. birthday in
Feb. of 2010.  My goal was to begin learning all about the art of knitting when I turned 60.
You have spent many hours right in my living room teaching me lessons slowly,
standing still, in reverse or over and over. Wholly Cow, are you a patient instructor !
I now feel that I know you. You are in hundreds of homes where, I’m sure, others
feel the same way. You have hundreds and hundreds of students who, if they saw you
walking down the street, would call out to you like an old friend, “Lucy” ! !” Thank you” !
“Remember when you taught me to knit” ? !
So, for all of us who are too far away to shake your hand in person, Thank you Lucy !

You taught me to knit ! !

Your friend D****”

Do take time to write, in this fast paced virtual world to anyone who has made a difference in your life. It will make the world a finer place.

  1. we’ll then, let me add to the thanks!
I purchased your craftsy class “My First Sock” and I have to tell you that for the first time ever, I was able to use FIDDLY dpns!!! Never could do it before, until you encouraged me. I was able to follow along and complete this secret goal of mine to understand the mechanics of a sock, which I have not been able to do in the past!
    and I did.
and I cannot believe I finished a pair of socks! I’m thrilled!!! I have the hugest smile!!!!
my husband looks at me and says “a sock, Michele? you’re excited about making a sock?” hahahaha!!!!!
I cannot explain to him what the big deal is over doing this, but after I shared how difficult each step is to a beginner, and how I did it, and he actually held the sock and LOOKED at what I did,
he got the hugest smile too! then he sincerely started saying things like “well good for you honey!” & “that’s pretty great!”. (AND I hear him bragging about it to his family over the phone! haha)
    he gets it now.
he sees my smile on the outside, but he knows my eyes.
and he sees I’m truly glowing from the inside over my success of finishing something that was difficult, and accomplishing what I’ve always thought of as an unattainable goal!!
Not anymore. that class was PERFECT for this newbie and I am grateful it wasn’t boring and held my attention and was such a treat!
    — thank you for making the video, for all the little things you said in between all the tips and tricks and just making it fun and relaxing to try it.
I kept thinking, I just KNOW I would love this gal in person because of her HAIR ALONE!!! you just have fun written all over ya! 🙂
    thanks again and again!

Haha! I love that letter. I remember when I saw you in Scotland, I was surprised you didn’t recognize me because you had been in my home so often! I found your DVDs really gave me an understanding of my knitting that now allows me to fix mistakes and know why things are done a certain way. Your teaching is so clear and some of your methods are ingenious! You are truly a master. The only negative about the DVDs is that I find the lessons to be not organized in an order that I can follow and easily find the particular lesson I need – an index on the cover would be really helpful. I really loved your live class when you came to the Okanagan last October. You were so patient and totally charming. I was so thrilled I had the opportunity to attend and would recommend your class to everyone. Now I have just discovered Craftsy and will purchase the double-knitting class there as a refresher. The index I see looks like something I can understand. I’m so looking forward to it.

    • Thanks so much for your message. 🙂 I do agree an index on the cover of each disc would be very helpful – perhaps we should have done this instead of all the standard type of blurb! The new virtual on-line video DVDs do appear as list of topics when you access them from your on-line Notebook.
There is a printable version of the full DVD index accessible from the DVD homepage. You may either print it as a booklet, staple it and trim it down. It will then fit inside a DVD case. However the suggestion I like is to print the booklet single sided and then cut out the list for each DVD and slip this inside the transparent back cover of the appropriate disc. Hope this helps you to keep track of things. Happy stitches!

Hi there! Quick question that’s entirely off topic.
Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My weblog looks weird
when viewing from my iphone4. I’m trying to find a template or plugin that might be able
to correct this problem. If you have any recommendations, please share.
    Cheers!
